Our first meeting

Two heads can definitely be better than one.

Considering that I’m a new player and have only taught one other person how to play Magic, I was a little apprehensive when inviting my friend and her two daughters over to play with me and my husband for our first meeting. My friend hasn’t played Magic in several years, but she was definitely looking forward to playing a game with them that didn’t involve a touch screen. [Read more…]

The mathematical approach to building a beginner deck

As a beginning Magic player and also someone who likes to read up and understand as much as possible about a new skill or concept before actually using it, when I started to build my first Standard-legal deck, I read a lot of other posts about deck-building from the official Wizards of the Coast site as well as fan wikis, collective “answer” services like Yahoo! Answers, other peoples’ blogs, and more. [Read more…]

A brutal takedown at the Theros pre-release

I was late getting out of the house to get to the store in advance of the event start time, but actually ended up being right on time as the event didn’t actually officially start until about an hour (and change) later. When I got there five minutes before the store opened for sign-ups, there were a few people who had already been waiting, including one of my previous opponents who’d destroyed me with his Slivers deck at a previous Friday Night Magic. We talked a bit about the new cards and all the new mechanics, which are completely new to Magic. [Read more…]

The booster box birthday bonanza

I should have known something was up when I started to prepare dinner and found that there was a Magic 2014 booster pack sitting in the vegetable crisper. There was another one in the meat crisper, a third by our chef’s knives, a fourth underneath a container of pine nuts, and two more sitting in areas near where my husband had asked me where the various ingredients were for our dinner. How to make divider tabs for a long-box of Magic cards

When I decided that I wanted to learn how to play Magic: The Gathering back in February, one of my first major purchases was a Deckbuilder’s Toolkit for the 2013 Core set. As I began to read the cards and learn what they did, I also realized that if I wanted to keep my cards organized in the box that came with the kit, I would have to find some way of separating my creatures from my Instant and Sorcery spells, my Enchantments from my Artifacts and so on. And, as I got more proficient in building decks, I would need some way of being able to go straight to the category of card I wanted without flipping past cards I didn’t need to see right away. In search of land

I still think it was worth it

To crib from a “Friday Nights” video, last night I was welcomed to “Milltown, population: All of Your Cards.”

Rather than the Red/White/Black deck I’d drafted during my first booster draft or the Green/Black deck I’d built in the interim, I came to Friday Night Magic with the same Blue/White Control deck I’d brought last time, with some minor additions. [Read more…]

A first-time player at Friday Night Magic

Look at the shiny supplies!

Yesterday, I participated in my very first-ever Friday Night Magic tournament. I got there not long after 5 pm and the room was already comfortably full of people who had already paid their tournament fees and were playing against each other for fun. The ages ranged from “middle-school kid” to “first-generation, first-edition player” (although I would find out later that he was the father of the store manager and only started playing recently).

While signing up, I talked to the store manager about the changes I’d made to my Standard-format deck in the face finding out that four entire sets of cards would no longer be legal to play with after the end of September. He reviewed my deck and thought that it still seemed decent enough to play with; I was rather pleased with this because it was really tough finding equivalents to the outgoing cards using only the cards I’d previously bought and not buying any additional single cards.
